TIMBER SALE
The Firvana Timber Sale would clearcut the 60-acre Gold Creek Legacy Forest in Kitsap County—an ecologically rich, century-old forest above the Tin Mine Trail in Green Mountain State Forest. Home to old-growth snags, diverse tree species, and habitat for declining birds like the Golden-crowned Kinglet, this forest has been recognized as a priority conservation area by Kitsap County.
Originally paused in January 2024 under Commissioner Dave Upthegrove’s moratorium on logging mature forests, DNR later attempted to revive the sale—claiming the forest was “in decline” due to natural fungi and insects. But these are normal disturbance agents essential to forest health and biodiversity.
Following public outcry and advocacy, the DNR has re-paused the sale, giving the Gold Creek Legacy Forest a temporary reprieve. The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners have requested that this area be protected using funds allocated during the 2025 legislative session. LFDC will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for the permanent protection of this forest.
