About the event
On Sunday, November 1st, join the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition (LFDC) and Twin Harbors Waterkeeper for a group walk in Capitol State Forest! Learn all about legacy forests, why they matter, and how a proposed wood pellet plant in Hoquiam could impact their future. When: Sunday, November 1st, 2026 from 11am–3pm
Where: We'll meet at 11am at the North Slope parking lot just south of Straddleline Park (located here) and then drive together to the site. Discover pass required.*
What: Approximately 3 miles, mostly on trail with 250' elevation gain.**
Wood pellet plants have devastated communities in the US Southeast, destroying local forests and creating a slew of health impacts on locals after promising good paying jobs that are never seen. Pacific Northwest Renewable Energy (PNWRE) is proposing to build a pellet plant in Hoquiam, WA, using local sources to create condensed wood pellets to ship and burn overseas. Join us to learn more about the threat this plant poses to our region, and what you can do!

**While this walk will be on trail, the trail terrain is unpaved and may pose challenges to some individuals. It is advisable to wear appropriate attire, including sturdy hiking footwear, long pants to prevent scratches, and waterproof boots to ensure comfort and safety throughout the hike. While we strive to create an inclusive and accessible experience for all participants, we recognize that individual needs may vary. If you have specific accessibility concerns or require accommodations to participate in the hike, please contact kyle@wlfdc.org in advance.
