About the event
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans to thin a biodiverse legacy forest in the Elbe Hills, by building a road and logging many of the forest's oldest trees. DNR claims that this timber sale, dubbed "Railroad Creek," would restore wildlife habitat, but the forest is already structurally complex and on its way to old-growth status. The real reason for the proposed thinning is economic: these older, native forests yield more valuable timber than the younger, more homogeneous plantation forests that actually would benefit from thinning.
