The Forest Service has proposed changes to 36 CFR part 218, rules that govern public participation in National Forest decision making. The new rules severely limit public oversight of the agency in a number of ways including: shortened comment periods, limits to length of comments, limits to information available during comment periods, restrictions on how long the agency has to respond to comments and more. The proposal substantially reduces the time allowed to submit comments on NEPA project documents:
Environmental Assessment (EA): Reduced from 30 days → 10 days.
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS): Reduced from 45 days → 20 days.
No extensions allowed for either EA or EIS comment periods.
