About the event

Located on the Usual and Accustomed lands of the Twana People (Today the Skokomish Indian Tribe) on the slopes of Green Mountain, the “Breaking Bud” timber sale threatens some of the last remaining legacy forest in Green Mountain State Forest. Unit one of this timber sale would log part of the headwaters of the Tahuya River which is home to the Tahuya Headwaters Legacy Forest, a 500 acre section of naturally regenerated forest, which is one of the largest in Kitsap County. This forest is also home to a 250 acre element occurrence of an imperiled plant community which was discovered by LFDC.  This discovery has led the Breaking Bud timber sale to being indefinitely postponed by DNR, but the forest has not been permenantly protected, and is still at risk.

Please join us on Saturday, May 4th to visit the sale and raise awareness for our Legacy Forests.

Where: We'll meet at the Gold Creek Trailhead, then carpool a few minutes down the road to start the hike.

When: 10am-2pm Sunday May 4th, 2024

What: The hike will be approximately 4 miles round-trip and almost all of it will be on trails, most of the walk will be hiking to and from the timber sale. Once we arrive at the timber sale those who are interested can hike off trail into the forest.

Please bring water, snacks, shoes to hike in and the appropriate layers in case of rain.
